Music

At Christ the King Catholic Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful way for children to express themselves, develop creativity and build confidence. Music brings people together, enriches our school community and provides children with opportunities to perform, listen, compose and appreciate a wide range of musical styles.

This year, we have transitioned from the Charanga Music Scheme to Get Set 4 Music. This exciting curriculum provides a well-sequenced and engaging approach to music education, supporting children to develop their musical knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years through to Year 6. The scheme offers a rich variety of musical experiences, helping pupils to explore different genres, cultures and traditions while fostering a lifelong love of music. Through singing, performing, composing and listening activities, our children are encouraged to become confident, creative and enthusiastic musicians.

Intent

At Christ the King, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of music by providing all children with exciting, engaging and inclusive musical experiences. Through the Get Set 4 Music curriculum, pupils develop their musical knowledge, skills and creativity while exploring a wide range of musical styles, cultures and traditions. We want every child to gain confidence as performers, listeners and composers, and to understand the important role music plays in enriching our lives and bringing people together. Based on Get Set 4 Music's curriculum approach to building knowledge, skills and memorable musical experiences.

Implementation

Music is taught through the Get Set 4 Music scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. Lessons build progressively on prior learning, allowing children to develop their singing, listening, performing, composing and evaluating skills over time. Teachers are supported by high-quality lesson plans, knowledge organisers, assessment tools and curriculum mapping to ensure learning is engaging, accessible and ambitious for all pupils. Children experience a broad range of musical genres and opportunities to create, perform and respond to music with growing confidence.

Impact

By the time children leave Christ the King, they will have developed a secure understanding of key musical concepts and skills, alongside a genuine enjoyment and appreciation of music. They will be able to perform, compose and listen critically with confidence, creativity and enthusiasm. Through regular opportunities to participate in music-making, pupils build resilience, teamwork and self-expression, helping them to become confident learners who value the role of music in their own lives and in the wider world. This aligns with Get Set 4 Music's focus on meaningful progression, creativity, performance and assessment.

Enrichment Opportunities

Music is an important part of life at Christ the King and extends far beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, children are given many opportunities to develop their performance skills and share their talents through school events, including Nativity performances, Carol Concerts, class assemblies and hymn practice. These experiences help pupils grow in confidence, creativity and teamwork while fostering a love and appreciation of music.

We are also delighted to offer instrumental music lessons through Elliot Harrison, providing children with the opportunity to further develop their musical skills and interests. These lessons enable pupils to build confidence as musicians and explore music beyond the curriculum.
