ELSA

“Emotional Regulation is not about not feeling. Neither is it exerting tight control over what we feel. And it is not about banishing negative emotions and only feeling positive ones. Rather, emotional regulation starts with giving ourselves and others the permission to own our feelings- all of them.”

Marc Brackett

Learning to manage our emotions can be difficult, especially for our young people, but that is where I come in. My name is Nicola-Louise Baker, and I am the Pastoral Support Worker here at Christ The King.

I am a fully trained ELSA practitioner. ELSA’s are Emotional Literacy Support Teaching Assistants with a wealth of experience working with pupils to help them manage and process their emotional well-being.

I support the children of Christ the King in both intensive one-on-one sessions for 8 weeks and multiple groups, helping children with a range of difficulties they may be facing.  I ensure that all my sessions with your young people are engaging and fun, helping them feel comfortable and confident when discussing and managing their emotions.

Our pastoral support worker has been an extremely positive and influential presence for the children in my class. She has supported pupils who experience anxiety, stress, friendship difficulties, trauma, and challenges with behaviour, offering them a safe and trusted space to talk and feel understood.”

“Talking to Miss Baker makes me feel calmer and less worried. She helps me when my feelings feel too big.”

“When I’m upset, feel that everyone is against me or angry, she helps me understand why and shows me how to make it better.”

“I like having someone I can talk to who listens and doesn’t tell me off. It makes school feel safer.”

“She helped me with my friends when things were hard. I feel happier coming to school now.”

“When I feel stressed or scared, I know I can go and talk to her, and I won’t be judged.”

“I have gained more confidence than before. I can now stand up in front of class or the school and help me achieve things I was scared to do before.”
