A very warm welcome to our Year 1 and Year 2 class page. We are so excited to begin this new chapter in your child's learning journey and to be working in partnership with you throughout the year.

Meet the Teachers

In Year 1 and Year 2 children are encouraged to experiment and practise knowledge and skills through the National Curriculum subjects. Every day the children can have the opportunity to be a designer, an artist, a writer, a scientist, a musician, a mathematician, a storyteller, an athlete, a geographer or historian. Carefully planned experiences inspire the children to consolidate their skills, knowledge and understanding, enabling them to be independent, resilient learners who motivate themselves to take on the next challenge and push themselves to their limits. Throughout the environment, you will see busy children actively engaged in a wide range of activities that they have chosen.

 

We also benefit from a wonderful environment with safe, spacious grounds and beautiful surroundings, providing many opportunities for outdoor learning experiences.

 

On this page, you will find updates about what we are learning, key dates, reminders, and ways you can support learning at home.

 

Key information:

 

Fruit is available at play time and the fruit changes from day to day.

Please ensure your child has their book bag and water bottle in school every day.

PE is on a Monday, please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit.

Autumn 1 - Homework

 

Each week, we would like the children to complete two spelling activities from the green section and one math activity from the blue section. Across the term they should also enjoy completing at least three topic activities from the purple section.

 

This weeks spellings as of the (20.10.25) are

These spellings will be changed every two weeks and the children will be required to spell these in spelling sessions throughout the school week.

Reading

 

Reading is a fundamental skill that is taught in Year 1 and Year 2 as part of the curriculum. It is essential for developing communication skills, which are vital for education and working with others. The curriculum aims to ensure that children become confident readers, able to engage with the challenges of a wider curriculum.

 

Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics is a structured phonics program designed to help children aged 4 to 7 to learn to read and write fluently. It focuses on teaching the sounds of letters and how to blend them to form words. The program emphasizes comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling skills, ensuring that children can read at speed and with confidence.

 

  • Every lesson connects with the last lesson and each activity connects with the next, the phonics, the reading and writing.
  • Children work in targeted progress groups so they can all participate. No child is ever left behind. They are assessed at each half term to ensure the speediest progress.
  • Talking is at the heart of every lesson. Children learn the routines that enable them to explain and practice what they have been taught with a partner. 

 

Supporting Reading at home

 

Your child does not have to read an entire book in one go.  Any time spent sharing or talking about a book is beneficial, even if it is just a couple of minutes at a time. If they have to close the book early because it’s time for tea, or they are just losing interest, that it is okay. Reading can consume mental energy and taking breaks gives children a chance to slowly build the mental stamina they need, so that soon they will be able to read for longer periods of time.

 

Find a regular time for reading in your child’s day, so that they can begin to expect it as part of their routine. This can be any time of day. Some children enjoy reading before bed, but others can just be too exhausted at night. It might be better for some children to read just after dinner, or in the morning after breakfast, when they have more energy. We encourage your child to track their reading using a weekly reading chart. This will help them celebrate their progress.

 

Also, create a cosy place in your home that you can call the “reading corner”, which can be any size you like. Let your child decorate it with their favourite books and soft toys, so they look forward to going there to read. Try to make sure they see you reading, or read with them, so they know adults read too.

 

Writing

 

In Year 1 and Year 2, children will build their confidence and skills as writers by exploring a range of different writing styles and purposes. They will practice forming their letters correctly, using spaces between words, and beginning to use punctuation such as full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks. As their skills develop, children will write sentences to express their ideas, retell stories, describe characters and settings, and record information. They will also learn to plan, rehearse, and improve their writing by saying sentences out loud before writing them down and re-reading to check that it makes sense.

 

Children will be encouraged to use exciting vocabulary, join ideas with simple conjunctions, and take pride in presenting their work neatly. Writing activities will link closely to the stories, topics, and experiences explored in class, giving children meaningful and enjoyable reasons to write.

Supporting Writing at Home

 

Writing little and often makes a big difference. Here are a few simple ways you can help support your child's progress at home:

  • Encourage writing for real purposes-cards, shopping lists, notes.
  • Say sentences loud together before writing them down.
  • Help with phonics sounds to support spelling.

The children will be learning all about Stanley's Stick this is a fabulous story about imaginative play and children using their imagination to create new worlds. Stanley's stick is not just a stick. With a stick in hand, Stanley's options are endless - he flies to the moon, writes in the sand, goes fishing, plays a whistle and rides a dinosaur - and his imagination takes over and the magic begins. 

 

Some fun activities you can try at home to support learning:-

 

Imagine it

 

Look at the way Stanley has been drawn with his stick in different places. How do you think he feels about his stick? How would you describe his stick? How would Stanley describe it? What words would he use? Look at him running with his stick under the tree. What else would he do with his stick? How might he play with it? What about on the beach? What fun could he have with it there? Draw pictures of Stanley playing with his stick in different ways at home or on the beach. Share your ideas with someone else.

 

Create It 

 

Can you find a special stick in your garden or outdoors? Make sure it is one that is on the ground. What does it look like? How would you describe it? What could you use it for? Can you use it to do a job, like drawing in the mud or can you imagine that your stick is something else, like a magic wand, an aeroplane. Maybe you could use different craft materials to turn it into something else entirely, like a stick person, a dinosaur or animal. Take photos of you with your special stick and talk or write to someone else to tell them all about it.
