Year 2 Miss Lockwood

Autumn 1 - Homework

Each week, we’d love the children to complete two spelling activities from the green section and one maths activity from the blue section. Across the term, they should also enjoy completing at least three topic activities from the purple section. Please return the homework books every Thursday. Most importantly, please take some time to listen to your child read and sign their reading record.

Thank you so much for all the support you give at home, it really helps your child to shine in their learning!

Year 2 Reading

In Year 2, children continue to build on their phonics knowledge while developing greater fluency and confidence in reading. They engage with a wide range of texts, including classic and contemporary stories, fairy tales, traditional tales, and non-fiction books. Through these texts, children listen, discuss, and explore ideas, themes, and vocabulary, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of what they read.

Reading in Year 2 focuses on developing strong comprehension skills. Children learn to summarize stories, explain main events, and discuss new and challenging vocabulary. They are encouraged to infer characters’ feelings, motivations, and actions, and to make connections between texts and their own experiences. This helps them to think critically about what they read and to express their ideas clearly.

Our Master Readers approach supports children in becoming confident, thoughtful readers. They explore a wide range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and develop skills in retrieving information, explaining and justifying their answers using evidence from the text, predicting outcomes, and making inferences. Children are also guided to sequence events, identify key details, and engage in discussions that deepen their understanding and enjoyment of reading.

Supporting Reading at Home

Reading every day makes a huge difference! Here are a few simple ways you can help support your child's progress at home:

  • Read together daily- even just 10-15 minutes builds fluency and confidence.
  • Talk about the story- ask questions, make predictions and share your thoughts.
  • Sign the reading record- This helps us to see all the wonderful reading they are doing at home.

Writing

In Year 2, children continue to build their confidence and skills as writers, exploring a range of writing styles and purposes. They develop greater accuracy in forming letters and words, using spaces correctly, and applying punctuation such as full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, and commas in lists. As their skills progress, children write longer sentences and begin to use paragraphs to organize their ideas. They write to retell stories, describe characters and settings, explain information, and express their own thoughts and opinions.

Children are encouraged to use more varied and ambitious vocabulary and to join ideas using a wider range of conjunctions. They are guided to plan, rehearse, and improve their writing by saying sentences aloud before writing them down, checking their work, and making edits to ensure it makes sense. Writing activities are closely linked to the stories, topics, and experiences explored in class, giving children meaningful and enjoyable reasons to write. Children are also encouraged to take pride in presenting their work neatly and thoughtfully.

Supporting Writing at Home

Writing little and often makes a big difference! Here are a few simple ways you can help support your child's progress at home:

  • Encourage writing for real purposes-cards, shopping lists, notes.
  • Say sentences loud together before writing them down.
  • Help with phonics sounds to support spelling.
